The other night I rented The Book of Eli, a film staring Denzel Washington. He is walking through a post apocalyptic world trying to preserve the last Bible known to man. The film itself was pretty good, and there is a great twist at the end that helped to like it even more.
I had to explain to my wife what 'post apocalyptic' meant. About half way through the film she asked, "is that really how it's going to be?" I told her I had no real idea, but something huge will probably happen. In the movie everything was dead, no green, no food, little water. Any resources that were available were horded by the villain and his crew. I tried to reassure her that things probably won't be so bad. Of coarse if you have read the Bible you know it is gonna get pretty hairy.
I pointed out that things might be exactly like in the film, but that there are reasons were are asked to have 72hr. kits and hold a year supply of food. My brother, Gordon, was watching with us. He pointed out that we are asked to keep a year supply, not only for ourselves, but to help those who might not be able to keep that much food.
I find these films about the end of the world only help to illustrate why we need to make such preparations. Low populations, low food/water sources, and cannibals none sound like fun. So, lets keep up the food storage and learn the skills we need to in order to survive without our comfy amenities.
Just watched this last night with my brother. If you think it made you want to get serious about your food storage, you should read "The Great and Terrible" series by Chris Stewart. Totally made me want to get serious about food storage.
