Winter Got You Stuck Indoors?

When the cold temps come around and the Holiday feasts start to add to your waist line there seems little hope to stay in shape.  I admittedly stay indoors and wait out the months to get outdoors.  No walks along the river or to the park.  No long bike rides on farm roads.  No day hikes in the hills.  (I do try to hit the slopes and get in one or maybe two over-nighters in the snow).  The hard part is staying in shape.  Instead of packing on weight for the winter, we over fed Americans usually add the pound during winter.

For a while I have tried to come up with a way to stay in shape through the winter with out having to pay for a gym membership, besides I'm not looking to lift my way to 21" biceps.  The answer was found in a bike trainer.  (my wife and I got this one)  We are both able to use my hybrid road bike and cycle indoors to sweat the extra weight away.  The trainer itself only adds a few inches to the length of the bike, so it was able to fit in our bedroom.  We watch Hulu, or Netflix on the computer while riding, and use the length of the episode we are watching to keep the time for us.

The trainer we did get was on the low end of the scale (under $150), but works just fine for our needs.  While a little noisy, it has 3 adjustable settings.  Because I don't plan to be riding in the Tour de France any time soon it is the perfect tool to stay in shape for the spring and summer activities that we all wait out the months for.
