My wife, Jessica, and I have been spending our tired nights watching movies available on Netflix, through their instant streaming feature on our Playstation 3 console. We watch everything from high budget blockbusters to TV episodes from our favorite shows. For a few days we watched a bunch of documentaries that Netflix suggested we might like.
One night we started watching a 2007 documentary entitled "Tapped". It is all about the bottled water industry. It explains that not only are we more than likely drinking filtered tap water from all those bottles, but the plastic in most of the bottles is basically poison. (This was the first high profile film to report BPA leeching from plastic into water) There were many other great points to the film, like the fact water isn't a renewable source. I recommend this film to anyone that cares even a little bit about our planet.
Now my family has been living off of bottled water for almost a year. Our tap water comes through old pipes and the water always had floaties and tasted horrible. So we decided, after watching "Tapped", that we would get a filter on our tap and start drinking from our Nalgene and Camelbak bottles.
Our next trip to WalMart we picked one up along with two extra filters. Our are the Brita filter found here. It cost us about $30 and the filters were $15 each. Each of the three items we bought also came with a coupon for a free Nalgene bottle from their web site. (You have to pay shipping, but $4 is better then $10) The filter works great and we are loving that we don't have to throw away so many plastic bottles. (For some reason there is curb side no recycling service in our town) The filters last around 100 gallons. Not only does it filter water but when you are running the water normally it has two settings, bot conserve water better than our standard faucet did.
My one gripe is that the adapter we were provided with the filter to fit our faucet was cheap plastic. It couldn't handle the presure and kept spraying water all over. I upgraded with an adapter from the hardware store and we don't have any other issues.
I recommend this to anyone that doesn't already have a filter for water. Not only do you save money in the long run, but it helps the environment in a few different ways. Happy drinking!
